Easily the most important room in the house to focus on when making the transition to a chemical free, non-toxic home environment is the bedroom. Not only do we already spend 90% of our time indoors, but 1/3 of our lives are spent face down getting cosy with our bedding including our mattresses.
Given I am currently tackling the daunting task of 'operation replace toxic mattress' and finding the world of non-toxic, 'green' mattresses rather overwhelming, I thought I would help others in the same position with a breakdown of what I have discovered during my research and product testing.
Choosing a chemical free, all natural mattress is the first thing I tell all my clients to do when starting to furnish a new home or apartment, quickly followed with the question "well which one is best?". Great question, because as the sharp clients will note, I personally have NOT slept on each and every one because that would be creepy if I snuck into the showrooms and had an overnight stay to test their products.
And while I have sat on and felt each of the ones available in showrooms around the city, I haven't physically tested them all so this review is based on a mixture of my thoughts in the showroom, talking to the makers, my own research on the product (and their components) and the reviews of people who have tried the mattresses.
The average mattress contains a dangerous mix of toxic chemicals and flame retardants that can lead to long term diseases, skin irritations and respiratory problems. The online mattress companies I list below (with the exception of coco-mat which is a brick and mortar showroom) use a variety of safe materials, like natural latex from trees and organic cotton, with none containing harsh flame retardants or toxic chemicals. Many of the in this guide brands are also made in the USA, which drastically reduces their environmental footprint.

The world of 'green' mattresses is certainly upon us, with a huge influx of direct to consumer websites out there. Beware the 'certifications' some claim, as when you delve deeper the green companies are not quite as squeaky clean as they appear. Always do your research and my best piece of advice is to always call the maker - if they cannot answer all your questions and then some, avoid them. A good, true to its values organic mattress company will always have time for a genuinely concerned customer!

* My focus here is on 100% latex mattresses (not metal coils / springs), I personally do not like nor wish to have metal coil springs under my body as that opens the whole whacky world of EMF and electromagnetic radiation that I just cant even.
